Avhandling: Long-term performance of a DEHP-containing NBR membrane and a plasticised PVC  DEHP belongs to a family of chemicals called phthalates, which are added to some plastics to make them flexible. In the past, DEHP was one of the phthalates most frequently used in plastic products, but its use has decreased in recent years for a variety of reasons. DEHP is still used in various types of plastic consumer products: DEHP, which is an abbreviation for di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, is a manufactured chemical that is commonly added to plastics to make them flexible. Other names for this compound are dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (BEHP).

DEHP is the plasticizer for most PVC medical devices. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is extensively used as a plasticizer in many products, especially medical devices, furniture materials, cosmetics, and personal care products. DEHP is noncovalently bound to plastics, and therefore, it will leach out of these products after repeated use, heating, and/or cleaning of the products. DEHP migrates into food from plastics during processing and storage. (1) Exposure to DEHP can also occur during certain medical procedures, such as blood transfusions and kidney dialysis and use of respirators.

Medical devices made from PVC contain 20-40% DEHP.12,13 Mediset, which is produced as a set of infusion, contains 25-33% DEHP. Exposure to DEHP apparently occurs during the entire human life time, from different sources. Exposure may therefore be equated with persistent low dose exposure.

DEHT and DEHP isomer molecules have the same number of atoms: C24H38O4,but a different structure (structural formulae) and different physical and chemical properties. This shows how important structural differences are in determining a compound’s metabolism and toxicity. DEHP and DEHT are very different from each other in this respect.

DEHP is also used in PVC medical products. As in other products, DEHP can leach out of flexible PVC medical devices into the solution or medication it contains and subsequently into the patient.

Diethylhexylphthalate (DEHP) is a phthalate, a chemical substance that is frequently used to soften PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) medical devices, such as blood bags, tubing, catheters and disposable gloves to make materials more pliable and comfortable to use. DEHP has been shown to produce a wide range of toxic effects, particularly in male neonates where the infant’s reproductive system can be compromised. Various plasticizers have been used as softeners for PVC. 2-7.
